Environmental Benefits

Corporations committed to environmental responsibility programs and sustainability measures are increasingly turning to reusable packaging systems as the solution to landfill crisis, solid waste reduction, greenhouse gas emissions and overall energy consumption. With reusables, there is less waste for companies to manage for recycling or disposal.  In addition, improvement of transportation efficiency through reusables packaging systems results in fewer trips and therefore reduced fuel costs. The primary environmental values with reusable packaging are the following:

       -Reduced solid waste

       -Reduced greenhouse gas emissions

       -Improved transportation efficiency

       -Source reduction

       -Energy use reduction

These claims were substantiated in a landmark study conducted by Franklin Associates in 2004, Life Cycle Inventory of Reusable Plastic Containers and Display Ready Corrugated containers used for fresh produce applications. An executive summary of the study can be found in the Research section of the Library.
